Seven accused members of German far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
