At least 13 individuals perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
